Goldwater, Obama and American Politics.

Libertarianism: - Beliefnet Forums:

"Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice.
Barry Goldwater

Our last great attempt to elect a Libertarian.

Unfortunately, also the last election where it was not necessary to choose between two nutcases. At least this election only two of the four are nutcases. I still think Hillary was the best president we ever had, too bad she had to marry a nutcase to get elected, but American politics has always been like that. At least Obama is overqualified as is necessary for a minority in this country.

Ah, American Politics. Maybe the internet will change that finally, so that an intelligent, qualified and maybe some time even an atheist candidate would have a chance at being elected."

Whoever wrote that Barry Goldwater was a Libertarian had their head far up their own ass or had no clue who Barry Goldwater really was. Barry indicated he would be willing to use nuclear devices against any "aggressive" Comunist Force. So, we had the possible scenario of a "hawk" President, bombing Hanoi with nukes; with all the Soviet and Chinese "advisors" situated there, the only logical response for either of those countries would be a nuke strike on Saigon; then, we could all bend over and kiss our own asses, goodbye. Barry's zeal was just too much for those that actually used their heads for thinking and Barry was defeated before he could get his fingers on the button.

Libertarians are not necessarily nice people. Libertarian refers to a political philosophy of maximum freedom, economic, political and social for the homeland. It says nothing of foreign policy or the means to protect the homeland.

Barry Goldwater was equally "authoritarian" about domestic and foreign policies:

"Security from domestic violence, no less than from foreign aggression, is the most elementary and fundamental purpose of any government, and a government that cannot fulfill that purpose is one that cannot long command the loyalty of its citizens. History shows us - demonstrates that nothing - nothing prepares the way for tyranny more than the failure of public officials to keep the streets from bullies and marauders. We Republicans seek a government that attends to its inherent responsibilities of maintaining a stable monetary and fiscal climate, encouraging a free and a competitive economy and enforcing law and order."

These are not the tenets of a Libertarian.

Remember, Goldwater was a Republican, not a nutcase third party ideologue. He was trying to get elected not promote a philosophy.
